Istanbul: Turkey’s Global Showcase
Istanbul is Turkey’s most significant metropolis in terms of economy, culture, and history. With a population of 15.7 million, it hosts about 18% of the country’s total population, serving as a strategic hub both locally and internationally. Geographically, Istanbul connects Europe and Asia, a unique position that has made it home to numerous civilizations throughout history.
Officially founded on May 11, 330 AD, the city served as the capital during the Roman, Byzantine, and Ottoman Empires, making it one of the most historic cities in the world. Covering an area of 5,461 km² and reaching an elevation of up to 537 meters, Istanbul boasts a rich urban texture combining natural and man-made elements.
Among its iconic districts are Taksim Square, the Asian Side, and the European Side. The city is divided into two main telephone area codes: 212 for the European side and 216 for the Asian side. Its lowest point lies at sea level, reinforcing Istanbul’s advantage in maritime transport and port activities.
Istanbul continues to stand out not only as Turkey’s most dynamic city but also as a regional powerhouse, influencing investment, tourism, technology, and culture on a global scale.
